Why A Ceramic Coffee Travel Mug With Silicone Lid Is Great To Own

Owning a ceramic coffee travel mug with a silicone lid is a great addition to any home as this kind of coffee mug can be a great compliment to any stainless steel tumbler. Stainless steel mugs are higher quality replacements for plastic travel mugs that were popular a number of years ago. Although plastic is still used many people are transitioning to steel due to potential health concerns of BPA in plastic.

Around the house however these large steel tumblers can be a bit much. They are usually oversized due to the thermal insulation built into them and the lids are often quite complex as they are designed to be leak proof, provide thermal insulation, and be quite durable. This is great for travel but when you are sticking close to home or the office a basic ceramic mug or simple coffee cup is more appropriate. They are easier to clean, smaller, and generally simpler to use.

Best Ceramic Travel Mug Features

When shopping for a ceramic travel coffee mug you should keep in mind your expected use and select your mug accordingly. Ceramic is not durable like steel or plastic therefore you’ll be unlikely to want something extra large in capacity. It may be appropriate to buy a 12 to 16 oz ceramic coffee mug but large 32 oz travel mugs are unnecessary and almost not even available on the marketplace.

When you stay close to home you typically don’t need extra large stainless travel mug with lots of storage capacity because you are usually a little closer to a refill. An office worker for instance may want a mug larger than an 8 oz coffee cup to minimize his trips from his desk to the coffee pot but will not really need something bigger.

Other things to keep in mind is that because ceramic mugs aren’t really travel friendly due to their fragility thermal insulation is far less important. Yes a larger travel mug made of ceramic needs some insulation but this is usually a design feature of aesthetics and material usage rather than a fundamental requirement. Many ceramic insulated mugs may simply have a insulated sleeve that wraps around the outside of the mug providing an extra layer of insulated protecting. The bulk of the insulation actually comes from the silicone lid which actually transforms a large ceramic coffee mug into a ceramic travel mug.

The Ceramic Travel Mug’s Silicone Lid

The silicone lid on a ceramic coffee mug is really the most important part of the equation. Many ceramic coffee mugs come with a silicon lid designed to fit perfectly with the mug and other mugs are sold without the lid. In the latter instance silicone lids can be found for sale on there own but quite often you will have to do your purchases online to get the parts individually.

The silicone lid is a rubberized disk that covers the entire top of the coffee cup. The silicone is usually able to be washed simply in the dishwasher and removes easily from the mug for easy washing of the mug. Ceramic travel mugs are conveniently less expensive than some of the best stainless steel thermal mugs but a bit more expensive than a basic coffee cup.

The lids when sold separately are actually quite affordable coming in under $4 on Amazon. These silicone lids can be used on any ceramic mug with the same circumference as a standard paper coffee cup or the can even be stored in your car or purse as a way to be green when grabbing coffee at your local coffee shop. The coffee shops are required to provide coffee to you under a lid but you can use your own silicone reusable lid to minimize usage of needless plastic.

Obviously you will still want to keep your stainless steel travel mug for longer trips to keep your coffee hot or for times when you need a more durable cup but sipping from a ceramic mug at home is often times a lot more comfortable.

I really like the stainless steel coffee travel mugs the best. They seem like they are the most durable and I don't ever have to worry about my coffee tasting like plastic. Also, they are very simple clean and do not stain at all.
